After
more than a decade,
our dream of a new animal shelter is finally a reality.
After more than twelve challenging years, the Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Island is building its new animal shelter. The main floor of this facility is approximately twice the size of the existing shelter and will have the capacity to care for the same number of animals.
At the current shelter, space is so tight that one small room functions as the entrance, office, adoption and surrender area. Some employees must even work out of office space rented in town. The new shelter will bring everyone under one roof which will help the ARL work more efficiently and effectively.
The current shelter was built in 1971. Since then, knowledge of housing and caring for shelter animals has increased tremendously.
Due to the age of the current shelter, maintenance and repairs have become prohibitively difficult and expensive. The new facility offers animals more individual indoor space, an easier to clean environment and continuous air exchanges which results in happier, healthier, more adoptable animals.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 24, 2013. The lot was cleared of trees soon after and construction has been steady ever since. A weather tight structure is expected to be complete by the end of November. Starting in January 2014, work will begin on the interior of the shelter.
To finance this $2 million project, the ARL kicks off its capital campaign in the fall of 2013.
